Japan day 6
Journal Entry for May 18
Traveling from Nara to Kyoto
Today, we journeyed from Nara Prefecture to Kyoto via train.
Our destination for the night was Kaikoan, a quaint and comfortable accommodation in the heart of Kyoto.
The highlight of our day was visiting the Garden of Fine Arts, an architectural marvel designed by the renowned Tadao Ando.
Visit to the Garden of Fine Arts, KyotoUpon arrival at the Garden of Fine Arts, we were immediately struck by its unique design and tranquil ambiance.
This outdoor museum, located adjacent to Kyoto’s Botanical Gardens, provides a serene space for the appreciation of art and architecture in a natural setting.
Architectural Design and ExperienceDesigned by Tadao Ando, the Garden of Fine Arts exemplifies his signature use of concrete and water to create spaces that evoke both contemplation and interaction.
The museum is constructed below ground level, preserving the view of the surrounding Higashiyama mountains.
This design choice not only integrates the garden with its environment but also creates a sense of discovery as visitors descend into the space.
The garden features full-scale ceramic reproductions of famous masterpieces, including Michelangelo's "The Last Judgement" and Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper".
These artworks are displayed on large ceramic plates that are both weatherproof and durable, ensuring their longevity in the outdoor setting. The strategic placement of these reproductions among cascading water features and reflecting pools adds to the overall aesthetic and contemplative experience.
Circulation within the garden is carefully choreographed through overlapping bridges, ramps, and massive concrete walls. These elements create varied perspectives and viewing angles, enhancing the engagement with the artworks. The interplay between concrete, water, and glass, particularly the greenish glass railings, adds to the garden's dynamic and immersive atmosphere.
